There’s something about the angle of this, and how you can see the material falling back onto the surface of the Sun, that makes it so much less abstract than previous videos of solar flares that I’ve watched. That and the billion (with a b) tons of material that are exploding into space.

This looks like cheap CG, but it is apparently real. Don Pettit, an astronaut at the ISS, created this sequence from still images he shot of the Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights. Bonus points if you watch in higher quality and spot Orion peaking over the edge of the Earth.

A high-resolution image of earth-rise on the moon. Not upscaled, not digitally enhanced, the data was always there, just unreadable. NASA have now read it and released it.
